We’ve got something very exciting planned for September that we can’t wait to announce! But first, we’re so excited to share the scoop on all the great things that took place this past month at Parker Place!
We promised in our last post that we’d be sharing some exciting news about upcoming events at Parker Place…and now, we’re proud to announce our Awesome August! The end of summer is near, and we’re ready to make this month one that will keep kids and families smiling well into the fall!
In case you’re new to our blog, Parker Place is a children’s wellness center offering dynamic classes for kids, teens, parents and caregivers in all the most important building blocks for good health. From exercise to cooking to nutrition and beyond, we’ve got it covered! Best of all, we’re opening our doors for some exclusive “sneak peeks” in August and it’s the perfect opportunity to check us out! Read on for the details on these three fantastic events!
Parker Place is not just a place where children get resources to help them lead a healthier lifestyle- parents and siblings do too! Just one of the many things that I love about Dr. Parker’s vision that is coming to life this month!!!
Being a Chef (to your kids) is Hard
As a mom of two children, I understand how difficult it is for children to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Let’s be honest, it can sometimes feel like trying to get a greased watermelon out of the pool. I find myself at loose ends. I am a caterer, third generation cook and self-proclaimed “foodie”. So, my children have daily access to a plethora of culinary offerings. But, I offer my kiddos food masterpieces and they are rejected. Sometimes, I dig in my heals, and watch them sulk over a plate of cold peas. Other times, I surrender out of despair and make another bowl of oatmeal, and not the good for you kind.
Well, the date is finally set for our Grand Opening at Parker Place event – July 28th from 12:00-4:00 pm. I cannot wait to share Parker Place with the greater Annapolis community! On that day we will have many of our instructors on-site ready to meet you and your family while running sample exercise classes, doing fun crafts and games, and so much more. We aim to make this event family friendly, so children of all ages and parents will find something fun to do.
One thing I am really excited about doing at Parker Place is talking with kids about growing your own food. Making the connection between what we eat and where it comes from is important and something that isn’t always talked about.
Classes About Where Food Comes From
In some of the classes we are currently developing we will be exploring all the different parts of a plant and what parts of the plant we eat. Did you know that broccoli is a flower and asparagus is the stem of a plant? A lot of people know that carrots are root vegetables, but did you know you are eating plant seeds when you bite into a crunchy corn on the cob? Learning about these details helps kids understand food better. In many cases, it all makes them more likely to eat these delicious and nutritious plant-based foods. Older kids will gain an understanding of how nutrients that feed plants become the nutrients that feed our bodies when those plants are harvested for food.
