Physical Symptoms of an Overweight Child

  • Fatigue

  • Shortness of breath

  • Increased sweating

  • Sleep apnea and snoring

  • Joint pain

  • Constipation

  • Gastroesophageal reflux (also called acid reflux)

  • Overweight BMI: 85th percentile to less than the 95th percentile

  • Obesity BMI: 95th percentile or greater

Behavioral Symptoms of an Overweight child

  • Eating high-calorie, low-nutrient foods and beverages (i.e., fast food, soda and candy)

  • Never feeling full

  • Lack of engagement in physical activity

  • Sedentary lifestyle (watching TV, playing on the iPad, playing video games)

  • High levels of stress

Physical Symptoms of an Underweight child

  • Fatigue

  • Dizziness

  • Weight loss

  • Difficulty keeping warm

  • Constipation

  • Underweight BMI: less than the 5th percentile

Behavioral Symptoms of an Underweight Child

  • Avoiding or skipping meals

  • Lack of interest in food

Mental Symptoms of Weight Management Conditions

  • Reduced self-esteem

  • Poor confidence

  • May feel socially isolated from their peers

  • Poor body-image

  • Complaints of being bullied
